Hey There!
I’m Dalay,
I am a Professor at the University of Minnesota with over 10 years of experience.
Although most of my day is spent teaching, one of the most rewarding parts of my job is helping students discover their career path and ways to market themselves through a strong personal statement.
My expertise is particularly well-suited for students aspiring to apply to medical school, physician assistant programs, dental school, physical therapy programs, and Ph.D. programs in science.
Why your personal statement
matters!
Beyond your GPA and your standardized test results, an admission committee member typically has just three ways to get to know you.
1. PERSONAL STATEMENT. This is the single most important part of your application because it’s the only element you control completely. Unlike test scores or recommendation letters, it gives you the platform to speak directly to the admissions committee, showing them who you are beyond your grades and resume. This is your chance to share your story, the experiences that have shaped you, and your motivations for joining the field, making a compelling case for why you’re the right fit for their program.
2. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION. Letters of recommendation offer valuable insights into an applicant’s abilities, but they have certain limitations. Since these letters are written from another person's perspective, they tend to focus on a specific area of performance, often lacking deeper, personal insights into an applicant's unique qualities or aspirations.
3. THE INTERVIEW. The interview is an important part of the application process, offering you a valuable opportunity to showcase your personality and communication skills in person. However, reaching this stage depends heavily on your personal statement, as it’s often what convinces the committee to invite you for an interview.
How I can help
You
Stand Out.
IDENTIFY & REFLECT ON KEY EXPERIENCES.
Together, we will pinpoint the most impactful experiences and influential people who have shaped your journey toward medicine. I’ll encourage you to reflect on the emotional impact of these moments and what you learned about yourself, patient care, and the healthcare system, making your personal story both authentic and meaningful.
CONNECTING EXPERIENCES TO CORE COMPETENCIES
I will help you link your experiences to the essential competencies required in your chosen field, like adaptability, teamwork, and ethical responsibility. This approach will show your readiness for the profession and highlight how you embody these qualities.
I will guide you in the art of "show, don’t tell," helping you convey your journey through specific, vivid memories rather than broad statements. We will work to develop a clear, cohesive theme that highlights your passion and potential as a future practitioner.

Ryan R. | Matriculated to PA School
"I am a current PA student at Augsburg University as well as the Founder/Host of Vitally Stable: A Pre-Health Podcast. I came to Dalay in a time of need where much of my life was uncertain. I told her that I had this big dream of changing my life goals from business to medicine halfway through my undergrad and one day becoming a leader for pre-health students across the country. It was a big dream, but it was my dream. Without hesitation, she believed in me and supported my journey in any way that she could. As of today, I study at my top PA school, have released 24+ podcast episodes with over 1200 total downloads in 40 states, and run my own Pre-PA mentorship group. Everything I have been able to create would not be possible without her. I am and always will be forever thankful for her."

"Dr. O played a crucial role in my preparation and subsequent admittance to medical school. Beyond the classroom, Dr. O helped me extensively with both crafting and articulating my personal statement and later practicing for interviews. The great advice she provided during the process paid dividends when it came to interview day. Overall, Dr. O provided terrific guidance by helping me identify the areas in my application that would help me shine the most on the interview day. 5 years later, I am now a 4th year medical student at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, which would not have been possible without the help of Dr. O!"

If you need three meetings, it’s likely you’re either just starting or haven't begun drafting your personal statement.
First Session. In this session, we will cover the essentials of a strong personal statement. I’ll guide you in identifying your own meaningful experiences in medicine and help you brainstorm a list of potential stories to include. If time allows, we will discuss the layout of your statement, select a theme and create an outline. By the end of this session, you should have the tools to start drafting.
Second Session: In this session, we’ll review your rough draft. I’ll offer feedback on organization, focusing on how to make your statement stand out by showing, not telling. Many applicants have similar experiences (scribing, PCA, EMT, etc.), and a common mistake is focusing on tasks rather than the lessons learned about patient care. This session will help you avoid this and other common pitfalls.
Third Session: This session is typically used for fine-tuning. We’ll work on making minor adjustments to keep your statement concise, unique, and impactful.
